Our half-day tour takes on an exploration of Macedonia’s glorious history, as we discover the archaeological treasures of Thessaloniki (the second most important city of Greece) and Veria, one of the country’s oldest regions. We begin our journey through time with a visit to Thessaloniki’s Citadel, a mighty stronghold which has overlooked the city for the past 6 centuries. The impressive walls and grandeur of the “Fortress of Seven Towers” tell heroic tales of its former occupants - from the Ottoman garrisons stationed here until the 19th centuries, to the prisoners it enclosed until 1989. We drive further, to admire the Vlatadon Monastery, an enchanting Byzantine edifice built in the 14th century. Our bus then takes us to Veria, a living vestige of ancient Greece, inhabited as early as 1000 BC. Major historical figures, such as Alexander the Great’s father or the Apostle St. Paul, are still evoked by the city’s archaeological heritage. We stop at St. Paul’s Tribune, a memorial honoring the place where St. Paul preached his belief in Veria. We end our tour with a stop at the Church of Christ, a single-aisled edifice delicately adorned with exceptional wall paintings of Georgios Kalliergis, the famous artist of Thessaly. You will have plenty of free time to relax and enjoy the majestic beauty of the area at your own pace.
